let's talk about sugar


Have you ever craved something sweet after a meal? Or have you ever treated yourself to a tub of ice cream after a lousy day? We have most definitely all been there. I hope you’ve saved room for dessert- it’s time to get real about sugar. 

It hasn’t been until recently that sugar has taken over the spotlight for causing a myriad of health issues. Consuming excess sugar directly contributes to weight gain, a depleting memory, and insulin resistance, which tricks our brains into craving more sugary foods. Unfortunately, it doesn’t stop there: eating too much sugar can lead to high blood pressure, diabetes, and cancer in the long haul. No thank you. And just when we are trying to improve our health, sugar still follows us everywhere! Walk into any grocery store, and you’ll find that over 80% of the food has added sugar. It surely does not help that a countless number of brands today market their items in ways so consumers believe these items are “healthy”. Read any ingredient label, and you’re bound to find at least one of many refined sugars: corn syrup, high fructose corn syrup, maltodextrin, and dextrose, just to name a few. What happened to filling our bodies with ingredients we can visualize, and better yet, pronounce?

It might be in your favor to give up the Swedish Fish for now, but that doesn’t mean you have to give up ALL sugar. Natural sugar is loaded in fruits and vegetables that keep us full and provide us with energy to take on the day. Keep in mind that some fruits contain more sugar than others, but the pros definitely outweigh the cons. For instance, bananas, figs, and grapes are all infamous for containing high amounts of sugar, but are all excellent sources of fiber. If you opt for fruits low in sugar, berries are well-known for having low glycemic indexes, as well as being packed full of antioxidants. 

As with everything in life, balance is key and moderation is okay. Seriously. You won’t get bad karma nor will you get struck by lightning if you indulge once in a while. If you feel your best when getting your energy intake from natural sugars, continue to do so. If you want to cut sugar out altogether, it’s solely your choice. If you want a slice of your own birthday cake, eat the damn cake!  You’re the one making decisions about how to treat your body after all, so make sure to be fair to it.
