ginger turmeric elixir
I am coming off of both a vacation and birthday weekend where I over indulged in the vegan sweets. I had a cinnamon roll, banana bread muffin, gelato, hummingbird cake and a banana split. Oh yea, and a few Rosé Spritzers (Rosé , Coconut La Croix, Fresh Lime juice...really good) I rarely have dessert because most places don't have vegan options besides the occasional sorbet. However, the food gods were looking out for me and placed non-dairy sweets in front of me at almost every cafe and restaurant I walked into. Fast forward a few days and I am breaking out and my face is slightly puffy, I'm feeling a little bloated and I am experiencing some "brain fog". All clear signs of inflammation in the body.
Plain and simple, If you over indulge on sugar or alcohol you're not going to feel 100%. We all have lives, we travel and want to celebrate special occasions so completely cutting out every inflammatory food just isn't reasonable. (Side Note: I do completely support ousting alcohol from the diet. It ALWAYS makes me feel like crap.) but we can take steps to heal ourselves efficiently.
- Temporarily remove sugar and processed foods from your diet.
- Eat more vegetables and healthy fats.
- Drink tons of water. Add lemon for an extra bonus.
- Exercise and move your body.
- Get enough sleep.
- Don't stress. Keep calm and carry on.
This Ginger Turmeric Elixir is full of anti-inflammatory properties that will give your body an extra boost of healing powers. Turmeric is all the rage right now and is incredibly anti-inflammatory. It also promotes healthy, glowing skin and naturally enhances your mood. Ginger, another great anti-inflammatory, facilitates digestion and regulates sugar levels. Lemon helps reduce weight, is incredibly hydrating and cleanses the liver.
This recipe makes one serving, but you could certainly make more, keep in the fridge and drink throughout the day.
I N G R E D I E N T S
- 1/2 cup of water
- 1/2 lemon, juiced (about 5 tablespoons)
- 1 tablespoon of ground turmeric (or thin slices of a two inch piece, peeled.)
- 2 tablespoons of thinly sliced ginger (about a two inch piece)
- 3/4 cup of sparkling water
R E C I P E
- In a small sauce pan, combine the water, lemon juice, turmeric and ginger.
- Bring to a boil and then let simmer for 15 minutes, stirring occasionally.
- Use a strainer while pouring the mixture into a glass to separate the ginger from the liquid
- Let cool and then add the sparkling water to the liquid. Enjoy!
