coconut oil: 7 ways to amp up your beauty routine
Ok. Coconut oil is incredible. I have a big jar of it in my bathroom and use it for so many different things. Forget these "miracle" products with a long list of ingredients on the back that you can't even pronounce. Use organic coconut oil instead! Don't forget that whatever you put on your skin, seeps into your pores and body. I don't know about you but I only want the purest, most natural, cruelty free products near my bod.
Yes, you heard it right. Coconut oil has a natural SPF in it of 4, which blocks 75% of UV radiation. Although 4 doesn't cut it for me, I'm more of a SPF 75 type of girl, I've heard a million times that we should be wearing suntan lotion even in the winter. So, I feel very comfortable using this as my daily moisturizer and knowing I always have some protection against the sun.
2. oil pulling
What is oil pulling? I'm going to let you in on a little secret. Every morning I put a spoonful of coconut oil in my mouth and swish it around like mouthwash for about ten minutes. Do this while showering or checking emails. It's such an easy morning ritual. While you're sleeping, your body detoxes and rids itself of toxins. A lot of these come through your mouth. This is why you wake up with morning breath or a white tongue if you're sick. If you wake up and immediately drink water or coffee, all of these toxins just get flushed back into your body. Regular old mouthwash and toothpaste aren't enough to clear out all of the toxins. The coconut oil literally sucks out the toxins in your mouth without causing any harm to your teeth or gums because the toxins and plaque are fat soluble not water soluble, and can only be absorbed by a fat. (being an oil, coconut oil is 100% fat) Science rules!
Not only does this rid your mouth of toxins and your teeth of plaque but there are so many benefits- whiter teeth, improves acne, cures tooth decay, kills bad breath and boosts immune system- just to name a few! Just make sure you spit it out into a trash can as it can harder and clog your drain.
3. makeup remover
Always always always take off your makeup before going to bed. Coconut oil works wonders as a face and eye makeup remover. I put some of the oil on a cotton pad with a little bit of water and just wipe my face clean before actually washing it. This will seamlessly take off your mascara and is extremely gentle on your eyes. I usually don't wear makeup, so when I do I am very diligent about removing every last bit so I don't wake up in the morning with any surprises in the form of pimples.
4. face wash
Once the makeup is off, use the oil as a face wash. What? Yes, I know people usually like to avoid putting oil on their faces but washing with coconut oil will actually remove oil, dirt and will unclog pores. All you have to do is put some coconut oil in your hand and once it starts to melt, rub it all over your face. Next, put a hot wash cloth on your face and let it sit for 20-30 seconds. Then wipe all the oil off. The hot wash cloth will open your pores and the coconut oil will suck up all the dirt and guck, leaving you with a clean, moisturized face.
As we now know, coconut oil has a natural SPF, making it a fantastic moisturizer. However, there are many more benefits of using coconut oil as your body lotion.
I like to wash my hands immediately afterwards as oil can stain clothes. However, I've never had an issue using this as lotion as it soaks in quickly.
6. hair mask
If you want healthy, shiny hair without a million ingredients like conventional deep conditioners, look no further than coconut oil. Once a week, lather the oil on your locks and let it sit overnight. Not only will it moisturize and strengthen your hair but will also rids your scalp of dandruff, prevents hair loss, breakage, and split ends. Oh yea, did I mention it will also give you that coveted shine? Rinsing the coconut oil out may be a struggle for some. I just shampoo twice to make sure everything is out. No biggy.
7. shaving cream
By now you are using coconut oil for every other beauty ritual. So why not as a shaving cream too? Conventional shaving cream contains lots of bullshit ingredients that do more harm than good. Coconut oil doubles as a shaving cream and a moisturizer, use it the same way as regular shaving cream to achieve silky, smooth legs.
