why you need to stop eating meat and start getting real


I had been a vegetarian on and off for quite a few years. Looking back, I don't really know why I was one. I certainly didn't know about the health or environmental benefits and I don't really remember doing it for the animals. I do remembering reading the book Skinny Bitch and being disturbed by the in-detail description of slaughter houses. I think it mostly grossed me out too much to eat meat instead of connecting it to the killing of animals. 

Eight months ago, my curiosity grew and I really wanted to know what it meant to be vegan. I used to think it was this extreme and limiting diet that would be impossible to maintain. I watched the documentaries Cowspiracy and Forks Over Knives. I watched The Best Speech You Will Ever Hear by Gary Yourofsky. I watched Youtube videos by Freelee the Banana Girl and Bonny Rebecca. I read the book The China Study. I did all of these things because I was fascinated that you can not only heal your body with foods but you can prevent disease with foods- healthy, nourishing, plant based foods. With all of this inspiration and new knowledge, I couldn't not become a vegan. 

Here is a bit of a rant but some very basic, interesting information on why we shouldn't be eating animal products. 

Livestock and their byproducts account for at least 32,000 million tons of carbon dioxide (CO2) per year, or 51% of all worldwide greenhouse gas emission. BOOM. Animal agriculture is responsible for 18% of greenhouse gas emissions, more than the combined from all transportation. BOOM. Agriculture is responsible for 80-90% of US water consumption. BOOM. 2,500 gallons of water are needed to produce 1 pound of beef. Why are we wasting our time putting in energy efficient light bulbs and driving Teslas? Sorry, but you're not helping the planet if you are supporting the meat and dairy industry.

Did you know that you can't get cholesterol from eating Doritos or Mountain Dew or Oreos? That is because cholesterol, the plaque that clogs your arteries and causes heart disease, only comes from animal products. This includes beef, chicken, fish, dairy products and eggs. However, there is no cholesterol in plant foods! Not only is there zero cholesterol in fruits and vegetables, but by reducing your intake of animal products and increasing the amount of veg in your diet, you can REDUCE THE AMOUNT OF CHOLESTEROL IN YOUR ARTERIES AND REVERSE YOUR HEART DISEASE!!! 

A N I M A L  W E L F A R E
Most people love animals. They post about them on Instagram, have pets that are part of their families, give their pets Instagrams, etc. But for some reason we are taught that some animals are meant for loving and others are meant for eating. Dogs are meant to sleep in our beds with us but pigs are meant for a BLT? We get very emotional about the abuse of dogs or when people hunt lions, elephants and rhinos but the abuse of cows, chickens and pigs is totally cool. Think about that. Why are we taught that this is normal? 

D A I R Y   I S   S C A R Y
Like humans and every other milk producing animal, we only produce milk when we are pregnant to then feed to our baby. This is the same for cows. Let me repeat, cows do not just naturally produce milk for our enjoyment. What really goes down is the "farmer" artificially inseminates the cow. They then give birth and the baby  is immediately taken from them and either sent to be killed for veal or to become a dairy cow. Next, that hormone filled milk that is meant for the baby to help it grow into a big, full-grown cow is pumped from the udders and put into containers with well thought out marketing campaigns and sold to us to make us turn into fat cows. Why? We don't need milk. It's not healthy for us. Those are lies that we were taught as children. Don't even get me started on eggs. You know that is a hen's period, right?

M O N E Y  =  P O W E R
The meat and dairy industries exist because it is in such high demand. If people didn't want it, they wouldn't be raising and killing animals at this insane rate. (Over 56 billion farmed animals are killed every year by humans. These shocking figures do not even include fish and other sea creatures whose deaths are so great they are only measured in tonnes) When you go to a restaurant or the grocery store, you vote for what you want with your dollar. Think about what you are buying and what you are voting for every time you buy food. Do not pay someone else to kill animals for you. 

In closing, people may think this post is obnoxious but I don't really care. I just want to be true to who I am and what I believe in. If everyone was too scared to share what they were passionate about, the world will never change. Also, today is World Vegan Day so gotta represent.
