What does it truly mean to be healthy? How does one fully take care of oneself? The answers to these questions are, and as they should be, individualized depending on a person’s goals, interests, passions… or even lives for that matter. When embarking on a journey to promote optimal health and wellness, acknowledge that no two people will have the same diet or self-care ritual. What works best for someone else may not work best for anyone else! Making the most of health and wellness starts with breaking free of set standards and taking the time to find a fitness routine, meditative practice, or intuitive diet that wholly benefits all aspects of one’s being. With that being said, Meet Marcia Hamelin, the beautiful health enthusiast and creative director/muse behind Culture Curated, the Instagram account that inspires followers to explore, roam and #travellikealocalist. Below, Marcia shares with us her unique health perspective and tips on how to live your best life, following your intuition and reaching your full potential.

What is your health philosophy?

 Do you. Health is so individualized and there is no one-size-fits-all solution to living your best life. Learning to listen to my intuition for guidance for all things, especially my health and wellness, has been the greatest gift.


Who is your greatest health influence?

 I am continuously inspired by so many people and their incredible work, especially the women who have both pioneered and transformed the wellness industry. Ultimately though, the journey always circles back to myself and figuring out what makes me feel good.

What motivates you to live a healthy lifestyle?

 Being healthy helps me show up for my life and the people in it with presence and grace.


What does a day on your plate look like?

 Everyday is quite different. I eat based on my intuition rather than subscribing to any particular diet. First thing I do every morning is a tablespoon of apple cider vinegar mixed with room temperature water and a good probiotic. I also love lemon with warm water to get my body to alkaline in the morning. Currently, I have also been coveting hot tonics in the morning - usually Ippodo matcha or Four Sigmatic mushroom coffee blended with coconut butter or cultured ghee, Brain Octane oil, collagen, cinnamon, and adaptogens (hu shou wu, mucuna pruriens, chaga, & tocos are some of my favorites!). But on the weekend mornings, grain- and sugar- free waffles are my jam! Lunch is usually leftovers of dinner from the night before and most often, it's a salad with roasted veggies and whatever other goodies I have leftover from the farmers market. I always have cucumber and sauerkraut on hand to add to any lunch spread. For dinner, I have been loving coconut fish curries. I also love homemade pesto pizza and tacos any time of the day, any day of the week (grain-, dairy-, and sugar- free of course!).

 

What’s the one beauty product you can't live without?

 Oil, for face, body & hair! But if I had to pick one, face oil has truly transformed my skin. I currently use Osmia Organics Nectar Vital Rose Drops.


What does your fitness routine look like?

 My fitness routine is also intuition based. Movement for me is a meditative practice of getting out of my head and into my body. Movement shifts and moves energy, allowing us to experience release and make space. I aim to move my body everyday but the intensity and the type of movement will vary. My favorite way to move my body is yoga. I practice yoga several times a week and recently have started Kundalini yoga which I would consider to be the full package of physical, mental, and spiritual wellness. And one of the best perks of moving from NYC to LA is surfing! I absolutely love starting my day with a sunrise surf.

Do you have a mantra that you live by?

 In Lak'ech Ala K'in. This is a Mayan greeting or really, more of a way of life. It means “I am another you” or “I am You and You are Me.” It is a statement of oneness and unity with all that is.


Do you have cheat days/meals? If so, what is your indulgence?

 I don’t really have “cheat meals” because I am always eating to feel good, and of course, satiated! I do my best to connect with my body at a deeper level to understand what I need to achieve those feelings and most days that definitely includes chocolate! Right now, I am mostly sugar-free because that has been feeling really good so I have been indulging in some amazing sugar-free chocolates - Addictive Wellness Chocolate and Eating Evolved Midnight Coconut chocolate bars.


What do you think is the key to living a healthier life?

 Everything is connected. You cannot focus just on the food or just on exercise, that will only get you part of the way there. A healthier life includes physical, mental, and spiritual wellness, whatever those look like for you. Most importantly though, is love and connection - that is what we are here to do - those, to me, are health.

What does your morning routine look like?  

My ideal morning is waking up around 5:30/6 AM and moving my body right away, whether that is yoga, surfing, or going to the gym. After I move, I will shower and I always slip back into my PJs (I like to spend my mornings as cozy as possible). Then I will make myself a hot tonic or many days my partner will make me my favorite morning luxury, a piping hot cup of black coffee. With my hot drink in hand, I will burn sage to clear my energy and pick out a crystal for my meditation based on whatever I am working through. I usually meditate for about 20 minutes and spend another 10 minutes writing a page of gratitudes. If I have the time, I will also do some Reiki self-healing. Then I make a quick breakfast and hop on my bike to work.


Do you have any self care rituals?

Self care is a daily indulgence for me! My self care consists of meditation, gratitude rampages, surfing, luxurious skin care, dipping out of work early to see the sunset, you name it! I also love trying new wellness tools to keep it fresh. Some recent ones that I have tried are cryo, sound bath meditations, and full/new moon rituals.


Do you have any tips for people just starting out on their health journey?

Something I have been working on lately is “meeting myself where I am”. Rather than becoming discouraged because you cannot make healthy food like your favorite food blogger or don’t have a fitness routine like your gym-rat best friend, it is important that we give ourselves the same compassion we give others and allow ourselves space and time for growth. You are exactly where you are meant to be. Start there.

What do you think is the key to maintaining a healthy lifestyle for the long term?

 Focus on how you feel. Really getting in touch with the positive feelings that health brings to you will induce your limbic system, firing peptides that will unite with cell receptors in your body, producing a biochemical chain of events that that will produce powerful changes in your behavior and mood. All of this is to say, that the mind-body connection is real. Tapping into those high vibrational feelings will keep you moving forward. GOOD VIBES ONLY.


What is something that you believe passionately about and wish others did too?

Recently, I have been studying consciousness. I am deeply fascinated by what makes us who we are, why we are here, and how we can seize the full potential that the universe has to offer. I could go on for days about quantum physics, energy, law of attraction, and the universe at large. I will spare you, but if any of those words resonate with you… take it as a sign to dive in!

How do you find balance with career, fitness, healthy eating, relationships, etc?

To be honest, I am not sure that I always do. For me personally, struggle with balance has always manifested with feeling like there is a lack of time. Something I have been thinking a lot about lately is that when you are present, time is infinite. Time is just one way in which we limit ourselves. We also limit ourselves with money, resources, “have tos”, and “musts”. But if we can surrender to the present, let our intuitions guide us, we will move in the direction of our hearts, and organically prioritize what our soul wants - and balance is a divine product that inner guidance.
 

What advice would you give your younger self?
Listen to your heart.
