the truth behind common ingredients

Ok, this is going to be a long one. But trust me, it's easy to read and it's also a must read. I used to just see food as those that would make you skinny and those that would make you fat. I would read the front of the labels and see "100 Calories" or "Fat Free" and think those were the healthiest options. I never bothered turning the package around to see the rest of the ingredients because I didn't know why they even mattered. If it was going to make me skinny, why should I care ? Skinny means healthy, right? 

Wrong. The ingredients are everything. What you put into your body determines your health. Skinny on the outside doesn't necessarily mean you are healthy on the inside. You cannot trust food manufacturers to have your best interest at heart. They want to make money and will tell you anything in order to do that. Therefore, you need to take accountability for the food you are feeding yourself and your family. When you go to the store, read the labels and if you don't know an ingredient, google it. To make it really simple, download the app Fooducate. All you have to do is scan the barcode and it gives you the food's letter grade and tells you exactly what the ingredients are and if you should avoid them.  

Take a deep breathe and digest this information. Below I have broken down four foods that are commonly seen as healthy options. These are just a couple of products but the ingredients are frequently found in most packaged foods....

Cultured Pasteurized Grade A Nonfat Milk
-higher dairy intake is linked to an increased risk of prostate cancer
-dairy is the number one source of saturated fat, which causes cholesterol to build up in our arteries, causing heart attacks
-casein, the main protein in milk promotes cancer growth
-milk is the most common food allergen in the world

Fruit Blend (blueberriessugarwatermodified corn starchmalic acidvitamin A acetatevitamin D3)
Let's break this one down one by one..

Modified Corn Starch
-Contains maltodextrin and Monosodium Glutamate (MSG)
-reported side effects are nausea, weight gain, chest mains, headaches and heart palpitations. 

Malic Acid
-destroys tooth enamel and promotes tooth decay
-can give you an upset stomach, acid reflux, gas, bloating and diarrhea 

Potassium Sorbate Added to Maintain Freshness,
-studies have shown it can cause genetic mutations, damage our white blood cells and even promote cancer growth

Natural Flavor
-Natural flavors can really mean any flavor that isn't made from scratch in a lab, but doesn't mean that it's something you should eat. Check out castoreum- it's a natural flavor that tastes like vanilla. It doesn't come from vanilla beans though...it's extracted from the anal glands of a beaver


GOLDFISH CRACKERS

Unbleached enriched wheat flour (flour, niacin, reduced iron, thiamin mononitrate, riboflavin, folic acid) This wheat flour is enriched with synthetic vitamins that can be toxic to the body. Excess natural vitamins can be eliminated naturally through the body but these fake versions cannot. They can be toxic to the cells and cause serious liver and kidney damage.

Cheddar cheese (cultured milk, salt, enzymes)
Milk-
See above. Also, causes infertility, inflammation, early puberty, hormone imbalance and weak bones

Annatto- makes the crackers more orange and is associated with Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)

Vegetable oils (canola, sunflower and/or soybean)
Canola Oil- Cold pressed, organic canola oil is ok in moderation. However, processed canola oil which is found in these types of snacks can cause heart damage, cell damage and brain damage long term
Soy Bean oil- This is from a genetically modified organism (GMO). This means that goldfish contain GMOs. GMOs are illegal in 30 countries but not the USA! Instead, we market them to children and parents!

Salt- Goldfish contain 250 mg of sodium per serving. Large amounts of sodium in the diet can cause heart problems, kidney damage, and high blood pressure.

Autolyzed yeast- AKA MSG!!! this is the flavor enhancer that can give you head aches, chest pains and trick your brain into being addicted to the food. No wonder you can't just have one or two goldfish.

Monocalcium phosphate- there aren't any side effects in small quantities, but if you have a lot of it, it can be harmful to your heart. But who needs that anyway?

Ammonium Bicarbonate- this is commonly used in the production of fire-extinguishing compounds, fertilizer, pharmaceuticals, dyes, plastics, rubbers and ceramic goods. WHAT ARE WE EATING THIS FOR?

Paprika, spices (contains celery) and dehydrated onions- ok these are ingredients I can pronounce but they are the last ones listed meaning they are the least used ingredient.

Carbonated Water- Ok not starting too bad... 

Caramel color- this food coloring that makes this soda brown is a carcinogen. This means that it can give you cancer. Cigarettes are carcinogens! It also decreases your white blood count (white blood cells help you from getting sick) This is poison!

Phosphoric acid-  This acid is an ingredient in dyes, polishes, soaps, fertilizers, livestock feed and polishing metals but it's also used in soda to make it a bit more tangy. Got to have that tang, right? 

Aspartame- If you see this on a label you should run in the opposite direction. It causes birth defects, brain tumors, neurological disorders and if hasn't killed you yet, then it will make you fat. Oh, and did I mention that it's linked to headaches, lupus, Alzheimer's, dizziness, seizures, muscle spasms, blurred vision, insomnia, anxiety, brain damage, abdominal pain, etc. etc. etc. HOW IS THIS LEGAL???? Oh yea, $$$ companies got to make that $$$

Potassium benzoate- combined with Vitamin C, this is a carcinogen. Which means that it is capable of giving you cancer.  

Natural flavors- see above

Potassium citrate- this is an additive used to neutralize the bad taste of fake sugars as apparently they don't have that great of a flavor

Acesulfame potassium- another carcinogen. Oh, and cause thyroid damage. 

caffeine- I'd rather have a cup of coffee than cancer in a can.

Whole Grain Oats- we like this

Enriched Flour (wheat flour, niacin, reduced iron, vitamin B1 [thiamin monotrate], Vitamin B2 [Roboflavin], folic Acid- This flour is "enriched" with fake vitamins because the real ones were stripped when the flour was bleached and processed

Whole wheat flour- ok, we like this too. But, why not just this and whole grain oats?

Vegetable Oil (high oleic soybean, soybean and/or canola oil)- see above. GMOs.

soluble corn fiber or maltodextrin- a highly processed additive that gives you a spike of sugar that follows with a large crash. It also promotes weight gain and insulin resistance

Sugar- These bars contain a lot of sugar. Too much can damage your liver, make you gain weight and increases your uric acid levels that then lead to heart disease. 

Dextrose- this is another name for sugar

Fructose- this is another name for even more sugar...it also feeds cancer cells to help them spread.

Calcium Carbonate- can cause stomach issues and make your medications not work as effectively. 

Whey- this is the liquid part of milk that separates from the curds when making cheese. In high amounts, whey can damage the kidneys. 

Wheat Bran- ok, this is good and contains good amounts of fiber

Cellulose- can cause bloating and diarrhea

Potassium Bicarbonate- see above. this is a carcinogen!

Natural and Artificial Flavor- see above or look for the words "Beaver Anal Gland"

Mono and Diglycerides- contains artificial trans fats which significantly increase your risk of heart disease

Soy Lecithin- possible long term effects are cancer, infertility and can effect the brain development in children.

Wheat Gluten- if you are gluten intolerant you should obviously stay away from this ingredient. Either way, cutting down on gluten can help relieve stress and give you a clearer mind.

Vitamin A Palmitate- this is a synthetic vitamin that's added to food because the real vitamins have been stripped through processing. Real vitamins are water soluble and we can eliminate excess vitamins that our bodies can't absorb. Fake vitamins are fat soluble and we are unable to eliminate them. Therefore, whatever our bodies can't absorb they accumulate as toxins in the body. 

Carrageenan- side effects are inflammation, colon cancer, brain disease, digestive issues and diabetes. Awesome!

Zinc Oxide- this is an ingredient that is found in diaper rash cream and is toxic if ingested in large quantities. It's just another one of these additives that isn't real food. It's used in, get this, batteries, cement, paint, plastic, rubber and cigarette filters. How is this food?

Reduced Iron- this one is straight up bizarre. Reduced iron is literally rusty iron that becomes "un rusted" by electrocuting it while simultaneously spraying it with hydrogen. uhhhhh what?

Guar Gum- this is a thickening agent that does contain fiber but also can make you constipated so it's basically a big contradiction

Vitamin B6 (pyridoxine Hydrochloride) This is another fake vitamin that is made in the lab. Many synthetic vitamins are made from a by-product of coal tar- a carcinogen that is in cigarette smoke! 

Invert Sugar- another source of sugar- this kind is a syrup and can lead to diabetes, weight gain, a fatty liver and tooth decay.

Corn Syrup- more sugar, just another name for high fructose corn syrup and many times is contaminated with mercury!

Blueberry Puree Concentrate- more sugar.

Glycerin- another sweetener that also helps to give food a longer shelf life.

Modified Corn Starch- this is commonly treated with harmful chemicals and should be avoided at all costs. It can give you heart problems and chest pain. 

Methylcellulose- can cause chest pain, allergic reactions, trouble breathing and stomach aches.

Diaclcium Phosphate- basically a cheap and synthetic version of calcium that the body doesn't know what to do with. Therefore, it will store it in your fat cells and deal with it later, making it harder for you to lose weight. 

Malic Acid- can be healthy when naturally sourced, when it's processed it can give you acid reflux, gas, bloating and diarrhea

Red 40- causes immune disorders, learning disabilities in children and even cancer. 

Blue 1- has links to ADHD and asthma
